La Maison Arabe Marrakech

La Maison Arabe is a well-kept Riad hotel located within the Medina. I appreciate the labyrinth-like layout and traditional interior that gives this type of hotel its charm and character. It is also very easy to see why La Maison Arabe stands out from other Riads. Firstly a lot of attention is paid to detail and the rooms are very well maintained (albeit one of the bathtubs we used could do with a bit of TLC, and if I am being pedantic then the height of the bathtub is a challenge for people with not so long legs); cleaning and turndown are excellent with fresh flowers provided.

Reception and front desk are top notch, always answering any questions and giving us honest and helpful feedback. Issue with the safe? They attended us in less than a minute. In need of toothpaste? We received a new pack along with a toothbrush in seconds. They also helped in organizing a tour of the Medina with one of the best tour guides I have ever had the pleasure of spending the day with.

Another great feature was the bed, very comfortable, firm yet malleable to my body. The bedrooms and bathrooms were very spacious and well-lit; curtains were proper blackout curtains which made sleep that much more comfortable. The ornate design of the Riad is carved into everything in the room; from the ceiling lights to the wardrobes and bathroom mirrors. Air conditioning was on point as well and that says a lot considering that we visited Marrakech during their hottest month of the year.

The food served at the restaurant was always decent, whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner. The Jazz Room has a full bar service, however the fixtures, furniture and lighting are all in need of a sprucing up. The whole room just looks tired if I’m being completely honest, but the dedicated staff made up for it. We also had the lovely experience of enjoying Hammam and Massage sessions at the spa; they were both very good. Use of good products in good hands.

In contrast to all of the positive points above there were only a few let downs; one was the wi-fi connectivity, which was attended to immediately with the provision of a separate router for our rooms. This solution was not 100% bulletproof but it was better than the original connection. It was probably our biggest issue as it went on up until we left. To be fair we didn’t mention to them that the router as well was not that great either because the staff were all just so nice.

The other was the use of taxis versus Ubers (not really the fault of the hotel). At La Maison Arabe they recommend the use of the registered yellow cab drivers. Some of these drivers are good in communication and have decent cars with air conditioning, others not so much, and in the middle of August when the desert heat is at its highest, I believe that air conditioning should be the bare minimum. However I can even manage the heat especially since the rides are not very long, but please note that they charge almost 2 to 3 times more than the uber drivers. The downside of using uber is that they drop you far off from the hotel (about 7-10 minutes walk) and are not government-registered. The lovely lady at reception confirmed that the hail-a-ride companies are not able to drop off on the road of the hotel for one reason or the other (maybe they are restricted from accessing certain parts of the old town).

All considered I am so happy we chose La Maison Arabe as the hotel for our first stay in Marrakech. A quiet and comfortable oasis in the middle of a bustling Medina with the warmest and most dedicated staff. I can’t wait to return
