The Riviera Spa Resort is situated in one of the most picturesque areas in the north of Malta, just across the channel from the islands of Gozo and Comino. This 4-star hotel enjoys a quiet location in Marfa, in the pristine countryside with an unspoilt shoreline giving fantastic open sea views; ideal for a relaxing holiday. The Gozo ferry is only 1km away and the bus stop is just 100m away from the hotel.
We travelled as a couple on the AI option. We used a private transfer which I'd recommend as it is a long way from the airport. Aim to avoid an early flight if possible as we could not access the room until 3pm, and got reprimanded for dozing in the lounge area (we had been up over 30 hours!).
Rooms have what you need: mini fridge, tea & coffee facilities; beds, tall mirror, tv, hanging space. We found the beds comfortable, but would have preferred a double rather than 2 singles. Shower was good, but be warned the floors are VERY slippery. I did the splits in our room and the restaurant!
We thought the food was excellent - lots of choice and each night was themed (Asian, Italian, Maltese...). NOTE: AI options are available in the lobby bar from 11-5 and the pool bar 2.30-5pm but you have to ask for these as they are not advised. Al la carte restaurants are all payable.
Good range of drinks and cocktails.
Pool is smaller than anticipated and when we stayed it was not as cold as I would like, but the showers were. No issue with getting a sunbed even when coming out after lunch or after a trip out.
Pool towels are available for a 40 Euro deposit - consider this as the beds have sponge cushions so your own do not dry well.
Entertainment is fairly low key which suited us fine, except the pool DJ in the afternoons which I found intrusive and unnecessary.
Hotel has a small gift shop which is very reasonably priced.
If you plan to explore do NOT use the reps. Buses are available at the roundabout at a cost of 2.5 euros per journey, regardless of the length. Boats to Comino and Gozo go from across the road.
One downside is that it is very isolated, so for that reason I doubt I will return as I would prefer to be able to wander in the evenings.
Tip for management: Please train staff to not take plates until everyone on the table has finished - on more then one occasion I was still chewing when mine was whipped away. Secondly they need to be more alert to people wanting more drinks.
