A very mixed bag for Luna. It's somewhere between a 3* and 4*
Check in at midnight was painfully slow, not ideal with a young family like ours. Our room was a family apartment in block 6. Which is accessed by a tunnel under the hotel into a separate building. Not brilliant if I'm honest it didn't feel part of the hotel, positive was it was quiet.
The room itself was spacious, clean and looked to have been recently refurbished, however the overall quality wasn't great. 2 separate bedrooms one with 3 single beds and another with a double bed, which as everyone else has said are very uncomfortable but at this price point compared to other hotels you know its going to have it's issues.
Pool was relatively easy to find a lounger or a table. Pool is very small compared to others but was adequate. Pool snacks and drinks service was good, staff always looked happy. We used the hotel buffet for breakfast one morning. Found it a bit lackluster in options but was cheap compared to restaurant offerings locally.
We bought our bus passes from the mini market, if heading south try to go out when the crowds are heading the opposite way to/from the beach. It can take 4 or 5 buses to go passed to finally get enough space to get on board. Speaking of the Luna market it's ok, prices aren't too inflated but if your SC maybe use Bolt or Wolt app for deliveries. We used both for Food delivery, McDonald's and other takeaway options that were very cheap and very quick.
The hotel doesn't really offer anything you would expect from a normal hotel, no kids clubs, no entertainment particularly other than a singer in the reception/bar area which wasn't really aimed at kids. But I suspect the hotel knows its demographic better than I do so caters to what most of their guests want.
It's a 3* hotel trying to look and act like a 4* hotel but the budget is 3* still. We would go back if the price point was right as it's a good base close to the beach and a short bus ride (20/25 minute uphill hill walk) to Mellieha.
A special thanks to the Maria for arranging for some balloons, banner and birthday note to my daughter who celebrated her birthday while in Malta. It was a really nice touch.

First time staying at luna holiday hotel. Excellent hotel and service. No issues checking in or out. Lovely hotel and all staff extremely friendly. Definitely will be returning next year. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Luna is a great hotel with great service at the bars both rooftop and in reception. Our room was amazing, shower was a walk in with loads of room and the view from the balcony was great. We found the beds very comfortable, the room service beyond excellent and the restaurant/breakfast food. Maybe a little more fruit at breakfast would be good. Dinner always a meat, fish and chicken dish but all cooked to a very good standard. There is a crane outside of the room however it didn’t bother us because we focussed on the spectacular scenery. The hotel throughout is exceptionally clean and toilets well maintained. This is a very good 3 star hotel although I believe it rates itself as a 3 star hotel with a 4 star service. We think it’s a very good 3 star hotel.
You’ll Be Given a Broom to Sweep the Water Out of the Bathroom
We stayed at this hotel for three nights and paid around £600, including breakfast and dinner. Unfortunately, despite the attractive lobby, bars and rooftop pool, there were far more negatives than positives, and I would not recommend this hotel.
We booked a double room, but what we got was essentially two separate single beds pushed together, with rather lumpy and uncomfortable pillows. The room overlooked other balconies, so there was no real view or sense of privacy.
The bathroom was by far the biggest problem.
There was no proper ventilation or extractor fan, which meant that after a shower the bathroom became extremely humid and unpleasant. It also meant that any smells from the bathroom immediately spread into the bedroom. For a room designed for couples, this is simply not acceptable.
But the shower was the real highlight — unfortunately, not in a good way. It was extremely small and cramped. I am an average-sized woman, and even I found it uncomfortable. Anyone significantly larger than average would struggle to use it comfortably.
Even worse, the shower door had a large gap underneath it. During every shower, several litres of water simply escaped into the bathroom and flooded the floor. We initially wondered why there was a broom in the bathroom. Then we realised that the broom was apparently provided so that guests could sweep the water back towards the shower drain after washing themselves.
Yes, you read that correctly: you take a shower, flood the bathroom, and then sweep the water away yourself.
This is not only badly designed but potentially dangerous. The floor was not just slightly damp — it was genuinely wet, and we slipped on it several times. Walking around the bathroom with wet feet while trying not to fall was certainly not what we expected from a hotel of this price.
There were other smaller but equally annoying issues. The toilet was extremely noisy after flushing, and water continued running through it for a very long time unless you flushed it again. At night, this was particularly irritating.
The air conditioning was another problem. It was so noisy that we had to turn it off at night because it was impossible to sleep. But with temperatures around 37°C in Malta, the room quickly became unbearably hot and stuffy, so we had to get up during the night to turn it back on. Either way, getting a good night's sleep was difficult.
The service was also disappointing. Some members of staff were friendly and helpful, particularly those we encountered in the corridors, but the reception staff and some of the ladies working in the dining area often came across as rather unfriendly, cold and unwelcoming. There was very little warmth or genuine hospitality.
The food was mixed.
Dinner was actually quite good and much more varied than breakfast. We had some particularly delicious fish, and the chicken curry was also very tasty. Credit where it is due: the chef clearly knows what he is doing, and dinner was probably the strongest part of our stay.
Breakfast, however, was very repetitive. There was a fairly standard English breakfast selection: eggs, hash browns, baked beans, bacon, several types of sausages and processed/cured meats, as well as some fruit and vegetables. Technically, there was enough food, but the choice was not particularly suitable for anyone who prefers lighter or healthier options.
For three mornings, my breakfast was basically eggs, bread, a little ham, some cheese and tea. There was no fish and very little in the way of lean protein. If you have a sensitive stomach or simply try to eat carefully, the options become quite limited.
Another strange decision was that fruit was available at breakfast, while desserts were served at dinner. It would have been much more sensible to have some fresh fruit available in the evening as well. After dinner, something simple like watermelon or melon would have been a much better option than having to choose between dessert or nothing.
The biggest disappointment, however, was the breakfast box provided for our early morning departure.
The hotel prepared it the night before and left it for us to take away. It contained a small packet of dry biscuits, one sachet of strawberry jam, a tiny plastic portion of apricot jam, one apple, a bottle of water, a small packet of orange juice and a packaged croissant.
Honestly, I would not call this breakfast. It was more like a very poor-quality snack. The jams and juice tasted extremely artificial, and the packaged croissant was not appetising at all. Apart from the water and the apple, we didn't eat any of it and had to buy breakfast ourselves at the airport.
The location is one of the hotel's genuine advantages. It is roughly a 10-minute walk downhill to a beautiful beach, which is very convenient. The lobby is also attractive, and the rooftop pool on the sixth floor is pleasant. The hotel has clearly invested money in its public areas, bars and restaurants.
Unfortunately, it feels as though much less attention has been paid to the actual guest rooms and, especially, the bathrooms.
There are several bars around the hotel, a nice lobby and a rooftop pool, but for guests who don't drink and who actually care about comfort, sleep and basic functionality, the shortcomings of the accommodation become impossible to ignore.
For £600 for three nights, I expected considerably more. There are better hotels available, including some three-star hotels, where much more attention is paid to the basic comfort of guests.
Overall, this was not an awful stay, and there were some positives — particularly the dinners, the tasty fish, the attractive public areas, the location and a few genuinely friendly staff members. However, the room design, shower, lack of ventilation, noise, air conditioning and generally disappointing service outweighed those positives.
Unfortunately, I would not recommend this hotel to friends, and I would not choose to stay here again.
