First I would like to add how great all the staff are..I read a lot of reviews in which particularly the reception were rude and lots of queues. What I saw is that all staff including reception were kind,friendly and always happy to help. You will get queues at certain times but other times no queues and always 2-3 staff on the reception desk.
Great facilities…water park is great and to have a water park included in the hotel is brilliant. There is an upper pool and lower pool. I preferred the lower pool but colder in the lower pool.
The hotel room we had (2105) the sea views were great and big and balcony area was huge.
The reviews I read before coming said the food wasn’t great but I think this isn’t right as there is food for everyone. Has a snack bar too so you weren’t ever hungry if your all Inclusive.
What I will say is that it’s the people who come to the hotel(not all) who aren’t respectful in clearing up after themselves specially when there are bins to put your plastic cups. What example Is this to your children. Shocking! It’s not the staff it’s the people staying at the hotel. I think a stricter policy should be put in place and that’s the same for reserving sun beds. Suggestion for sun beds should be restricted to a certain times specially as shaded areas go very quickly like 7.30am which isn’t fair.
Walking down the hill isn’t as bad as people say. I don’t like the beach personally. Not child friendly as way too choppy and you have to walk through a natural reserve which isn’t the nicest so wouldn’t recommend. The free shuttle bus is available at the hotel but we waited on one day at 4pm and didn’t turn up which was disappointing and the gate to the hotel which is short cut down the hill by the pool wouldn’t open with the room card so had to walk further uphill. Reported incidents to reception so hopefully that will be resolved next time.
Tv channels are ok as have English channel’s (bbc 1 ,2 and itv). WiFi is free and works throughout the hotel.
Check out time is 12 midday and you can reserve a shower room the day before you leave if you on a later flight which is great free of charge.
You have to pay for a safe which I think should be free as I have never paid for a safe in any hotel I’ve stayed in.
Barcy club is great and down so many activities for the children. Special thanks from my daughter to Jay and the lady with the dark hair(sorry can’t remember your name) made it fun and very friendly y and so good with the children. One thing I would suggest if full the Barcy club to suggest for example if activity is at the lower pool to come with parent as my daughter was very upset she couldn’t attend but happy with the activities provided. Also adults activities are good also.
Overall had a lovely stay at the hotel.
Wouldn’t stay again
We booked our stay directly through Barcelo and we only booked two weeks in advance however we wouldn’t stay here again! The evening entertainment it’s outside and it’s till half 11 - midnight if you here with kids and want to enjoy peaceful sleep and forget it! Even with earplugs it’s impossible! We never stayed somewhere where entertainment wasn’t in a enclosed space and for us this spoilt our time here massively! People reserving sun beds early in the morning as there isn’t many shaded spaces. If you not Spanish then there is a massive language barrier and staff isn’t very helpful and just don’t care about customer. Only one restaurant so it can be busy and food choices are hit and miss and food often is overcooked.

We arrived at the Occidental Mar and checked in, but our room wasn’t ready until 3pm. There was no room in the luggage room, but the staff kindly let us leave our luggage behind the reception desk. As we had been travelling since 2am, we went straight for lunch.
Food & Drinks
There is plenty of choice with the food, and we found it to be good quality. The dining room can get busy at popular times, but we always managed to find a seat. Food was replenished constantly and was always hot. We didn’t experience any issues with food being undercooked.
The only real bugbear was some guests being rude, pushing in, not using the serving tongs and hogging the toaster in the morning!
I really liked the fact that the staff don’t stop you from taking food out of the restaurant if you prefer not to sit inside.
The drinks were also good, with branded soft drinks and local spirits available.
Pool Area
There were plenty of sunbeds available. There are limited beds in the shaded areas, but thankfully there were no sunbed wars! We got up at different times each day and always managed to get four beds together.
A quick note on the pool rules: lifeguard rules can feel a little inconsistent at times. Inflatable toys and large floaties are not allowed in the pool, and only rings and swimming aids are permitted.
Entertainment
The entertainment staff were amazing. They were really interactive with families, and there was plenty to do, including pool activities, mini golf and darts. There was always something going on if you wanted to get involved.
Hotel & Staff
The reception staff were always helpful and friendly. The hotel itself was clean and tidy, and our room was basic but clean and well maintained.
The hotel is at the top of a massive hill, which is worth knowing if you plan on walking down to the beach. There is a hotel bus that takes you down to the beach at 10am and 11am, with return buses at 4pm, 5pm and 6pm. Taxis are also very reasonable at around €6.
The only real criticism I have is that the outside bar needs more staff. There was generally only one member of staff working, so it could get quite busy.
You do also have to pay for the use of the safety deposit box in the room.
A Big Shoutout
A huge shoutout to all the staff who often go unnoticed — especially the cleaners, pool staff, maintenance team, and behind-the-scenes workers. The hotel is clean and running smoothly because of their hard work, and it really does make a difference to the overall experience.
Overall
This was our first time in Fuerteventura and Occidental Mar definitely hasn’t disappointed us. We had a brilliant holiday and honestly don’t understand some of the negative comments and reviews we had read beforehand.
Please don’t let the negative reviews put you off! Everyone’s experience is different, but we had a fantastic time and would happily return.
The hotel was clean, the food was good, the entertainment was fantastic and the staff were friendly and helpful.
We’re really sad to be going home, but we’ve had a brilliant holiday and made some lovely memories! ☀️🌴❤️
A Pleasant Stay Near Jandía Beach
Lovely 4-star hotel with nice gardens and beautiful ocean views—definitely book a sea view room! 🌊 Just a short walk from the stunning Jandía Beach.
While not everything was perfect, the friendly and helpful staff made the stay enjoyable. A special thank you to Natalie at reception, who made my stay especially pleasant and memorable.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Great bar staff
The bar staff are very good, they were really nice. Joel in the lobby bar El Mirador was great, son ordered his own drinks and Joel was very friendly and helpful, he remembered my sons drink and would make it up without my son asking. A great assist to the Occidental Jandia Mar team.
