The Good: Spectacular Sea Views: Booking the Sea View room was completely worth it. Excellent Location: The hotel connects directly to the One Galle Face shopping mall, which is perfect for spending a few hours shopping or dining. Chai Wallah: The best part of breakfast was the Indian Chai Wallah walking around serving fantastic, authentic tea. The Bad: Housekeeping Failures: The room itself was nice, but housekeeping did a poor job of keeping it clean during our stay. Breakfast Mass Chaos: The morning buffet is a complete madhouse with zero table service. No Organization: Nobody greets or seats you, waiters just run around aimlessly, and tables completely lack cutlery and serviettes, forcing you to constantly ask for basics. Omelette Station Mess: The live cooking stations are deeply unorganized; staff tell you to wait, only to give your food to people who arrived after you. Verdict:The physical property and location of the Shangri-La Colombo are great, but the terrible breakfast management and lax housekeeping really let the 5-star brand down.
Magnificent hotel, wonderful staff, extremely comfortable spacious rooms with excellent dining options especially the wonderful breakfast. In particular, I would highly commend Arunadi at Guest Relations who was a lovely member of staff. Arunadi was very professional, extremely courteous and went out of her way to be helpful, making our stay at the Shangri-La extremely special and memorable. She is a credit to the hotel and must be commended on her wonderful hospitality and service. We are really looking forward to returning to the Shangri-La, Colombo.
Absolutely outstanding from start to finish! Shangri-La Colombo was one of the highlights of my trip to Sri Lanka.
The ocean view from the room was simply spectacular ، waking up to that view was an experience in itself. The swimming pool was beautiful, relaxing, and exceptionally well maintained.
The food was excellent, with great quality and variety, and the atmosphere throughout the hotel was elegant without feeling cold or overly formal.
One of my favorite parts was the live music in the evenings, especially around the restaurant and lobby area. It created such a sophisticated and enjoyable atmosphere and made the evenings feel special.
From the location and ocean views to the service, food, pool, ambiance, and attention to detail, everything came together beautifully.
A truly luxurious, relaxing, and memorable experience. I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Colombo.
Shangri-La Colombo – Standard of the Property, Rooms & Benefits for Top-End Guests For many top-end guests who know the Shangri-La brand well, this hotel often ranks near the lower end of the portfolio in terms of overall guest experience and the intangible benefits that define true luxury — consistency, polish, and that elevated Shangri-La feel. The overall ratings are solid but not elite: • TripAdvisor: 4.7/5 (around 2,600 reviews) • Booking.com: 8.8/10 • Google: ~4.6/5 (16,000+ reviews) • Trip.com: 9.3/10 My personal experience, however, was not defined by the property or facilities themselves. What truly stood out was the quality of the personalised service delivered by the staff — from the managers right down to the doormen. Every interaction felt attentive, warm and genuinely caring. Their professionalism and heartfelt hospitality are a real credit to the management and elevate the entire stay far beyond the physical product. That said, the broader picture — and the numbers — back up the “lower-end of the brand” impression. Shangri-La Colombo (and its sister property in Hambantota) consistently rank near the bottom of the group’s portfolio on key performance metrics, with relatively low occupancy and RevPAR compared with stronger Asian properties. Combined with the ownership structure — Shangri-La Asia (majority-controlled by the Kuok family’s Kerry Group) holds 90% — and the generous multi-year tax holidays and concessions granted under Sri Lanka’s Strategic Development Projects framework, a large share of the economic upside flows outside the country. Guest feedback on platforms like TripAdvisor also frequently notes that the hotel falls short of the standards people expect from stronger Shangri-La properties across Asia. In short: the staff can deliver genuine care of a high order, but the overall product and the benefits felt by discerning, top-end guests often place this Shangri-La toward the lower rungs of the brand’s ladder.
I hate to state the obvious - but the overall quality of a stay at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo has continuously declined since I first stayed there (c. two years ago).
Upon check-in, neither towels nor refreshments were offered (only to other guests, for whatever reason) but the lady at the reception (Ms. Naveahesa) asked me if I did not want to upgrade my room category. As I politely declined, she started insisting that it would be so much better – putting me in an awkward position.
The next morning, I went to see the reception desk to kindly ask for the removal of some coffee/tea/blood (?) stains on my room’s floor, carpet door (!) and desk - where Ms. Naveahesa attended me again. After she asked me to provide “proof” of the stains, she suggested (for the third time) I should simply upgrade to a higher room category (not joking!).
So, does the cleanliness of the hotel’s room depend of the category you book? Am I (asking for a friend here) wrong to assume that more than USD200/night does not warrant a) a welcoming service and b) some attention to detail? And why do we kept getting towels and amenities for only two when it was three of us in the room (and paid for three persons)?
(Needless to say, upon check-out two nights later, the coffee/tea stains still were there, i.e., the room was and still is outright unkept dirty.)
Whereas I understand the necessity to generate revenues, Ms. Naveahesa’s stubborn insistence in me upgrading to a higher category has put me off. It is because of her ‘service’ that I felt treated as a random client – and no longer as a (welcome) guest. Considering that this is the hospitality sector, this is a potentially troublesome development.
