Worst stay ever in an upThe tipping point occurred at the pool: five minutes before closing, the lifeguard began shouting at guests that time was up. At 7:00 PM sharp, he repeatedly blew his whistle while his colleague immediately removed my bathrobe and towel while I was still in the shower. The entire atmosphere felt more like a correctional facility than a 5-star resort. When I politely attempted to explain that his conduct was unacceptable, his English suddenly proved insufficient—though it was apparently more than adequate for barking orders at paying guests.

Logistically, the property is a hassle. Rooms are only accessible via buggy. While the service works reasonably well most of the time, bad luck hits hard. Returning from the pool, no buggy was available, and I was completely ignored by staff in the lobby. Deciding to walk, I was nearly run over by a speeding buggy on the steep, narrow paths. It is genuinely hazardous.

Further operational failures:

Check-In & Luggage: No bellboy cared for my luggage upon arrival. As I went to the Regency Club first, I expected my bag to be delivered to the room automatically—no chance. I eventually had to locate it myself. A very kind female receptionist offered to carry it, but I couldn't possibly watch a petite lady struggle with my heavy suitcase, so I carried it to the room myself. Furthermore, checking in at the Club is not supported.

Regency Club: Hands down the worst lounge food selection I have ever encountered. While the property technically fulfills the brand requirement, offering three lukewarm, generic snacks is abysmal. For vegetarians, there was literally only one warm item—deep-fried frozen fries. Meanwhile, restaurant advertisements are prominently displayed on the Club tables. The strategy is transparent: serve junk food in the Club to force guests into spending money at the paid dining outlets. This is light-years behind other Hyatt lounges in Thailand. Why inquire about dietary preferences in advance if they are completely disregarded?

Globalist Treatment: The welcome amenity was a pure formality. The dedicated Globalist check-in process failed entirely. The overall operational feel resembles a 3-star resort in India rather than a 5-star Hyatt property. Judged as a 3-star hotel, this review would be 5 stars—the grounds are lovely. But measured against true Hyatt standards, it falls drastically short.

Deposit & Harassment: As a Globalist, I was charged an incidentals deposit for the very first night that exceeded the prepaid room rate. When I extended my stay, staff literally tracked me down inside the Club to demand immediate payment—despite the fact that I had offered to settle this at the front desk earlier, where staff had simply ignored it.

The resort is extremely isolated. You are entirely dependent on taxis and face double waiting times: first for the buggy, then for the Grab or Bolt ride. To make matters worse, the hotel offers a shuttle to Patong only once a day, charging per person the exact same rate a private Bolt or Grab vehicle costs for the entire trip.

The line staff are generally friendly and try their best, but they are clearly poorly managed and disorganized. To top it off, when staff asked me twice during my stay how everything was, I explicitly expressed my skepticism and dissatisfaction both times. Each time, they simply smiled and replied with a scripted 'So glad to hear that!' This completely broken feedback loop says everything about the management culture here. Substantial money was clearly invested in the hardware, but management has tightened the purse strings in the worst possible places. With competent leadership, this place could be a dream. For guests who expect authentic Hyatt standards, however, it feels like a total farce.

If you have lower expectations, you might be satisfied. If you expect a true Hyatt experience, stay away.per-tier Hyatt property.

Best-value 5-star resort in Phuket: million-dollar views and a team that makes it special

My wife and I spent nearly two months at Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort. That is long enough to see a hotel on ordinary days, not just arrival day, and long enough to understand whether great service comes from a few standout employees or from the culture of the entire property.

The views are the headline. The resort sits on the hillside above Kamala Bay, with sweeping ocean views from the rooms, Regency Club, restaurants and pool. The main pool was fully renovated during our stay, reopened on schedule, and looks beautiful.

But the real story is the people. Staff are friendly, professional and remarkably even-tempered, solving problems with grace and treating guests with genuine warmth. That consistency runs through housekeeping, restaurants, drivers, front office and management.

Utsah deserves particular recognition. He has been consistently warm, thoughtful and engaged throughout our stay and clearly plays an important role in the culture of the resort. Arina and Ting were outstanding as well, repeatedly helping us in ways that went well beyond routine service. In the Regency Club, Namfon, Fern and Jane make excellent cocktails and turned our evenings into a highlight of the day, and Annie, Joy, Pang and the rest of housekeeping kept our room immaculate for two months. Mohammed, one of the bellmen, turned out to be a talented guitarist and singer, and hearing him perform at Casa Boho on my 60th birthday is a memory we will keep.

And then there is Chef Untung. After learning that I love a good Reuben, he made one for my wife at breakfast and, when she told him I was upstairs working, made another for her to bring to me. It was genuinely one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. He later surprised me with Börek from his childhood in Berlin, and on my birthday, a Grand Marnier soufflé with Nutella, my favorite dessert of all time. Those are the kinds of personal touches that turn a long hotel stay into something memorable.

A fair note: some rooms are due for refreshing, and this is not a Park Hyatt. But the essentials are outstanding. The mattresses, pillows, linens and towels are top-notch, the air conditioning is excellent, and I am picky about all of it. This is a tropical seaside resort exposed to salt air, humidity, and constant use, and the value proposition is exceptional. For views, service, warmth, quality, and price, Hyatt Regency Phuket is difficult to beat.

If you want a 5-star Phuket stay that still feels like a smart buy, this is the one. We will return.

All great, except food

Staff provided warm and helpful service. The facility is clean. Food choice and the quality were not as good as other Hyatt hotels. The club lounge offers a beautiful view but very little food selection.
